Computational Design of 3D Printed, Personalized Medical Devices

With the increasing need for medical implants that are manufactured for personalized requirements, 3D printing is one of the most promising tools to enable this due to its flexibility in geometry, structure and material variation. The project investigates the full process for customized design and fabrication of 3D printed medical device including: patient data acquisition (e.g. data from MRI or CT), design automation and optimization followed by 3D printing. Two medical implants are initially considered: artificial spinal discs and personalized bone plates.
