Offered Courses
Lectures
Engineering Design and Material Selection
Fundamentals of Technical Drawing and Computer Aided Design (CAD). Introduction to the design process and sketching. Create and read technical drawings. Create 3D models in CAD and fabricate them directly using additive manufacturing (3D printing).
Engineering Design Optimization
The course covers fundamentals of computational optimization methods in the context of engineering design. It develops skills to formally state and model engineering design tasks as optimization problems and select appropriate methods to solve them.
Product Development and Engineering Design
The course introduces students to the product development process. In a team, you will explore the early phases of conceptual development and product design, from ideation and concept generation through to hands-on prototyping. This is an opportunity to gain product development experience and improve your skills in prototyping and presenting your product ideas. The project topic changes each year.
Integrative Ski Design and Fabrication Workshop
This course introduces students to the practical application of integrative or systemic design by building their own skis or snowboards. Theoretical and applied Engineering Design skills like CAD, analysis and engineering of mechanical properties, 3D printing, laser cutting and practical handcrafting skills are trained and acquired in this course. Building alpine or nordic skis or a snowboard, selecting materials, taking design decisions and finally testing the skis/boards on snow and evaluating their properties, will be looked at from a systemic design perspective, where design for sustainability is an important element.
Tools courses
Engineering Tool: CAD-Methodology and PDM-Technology in the Focus Project
The participants learn about the procedures and tools that are necessary to develop technical products. The focus is on computer-based design and development and the management in an integrated software environment.
Engineering Tool: Computer-Aided Design Methods
Participants will learn about the Computer-Aided Design fundamentals and methods that are necessary to model complex technical products. The focus will be placed on feature-based and parametric modelling that is common to all modern CAD tools used in mechanical engineering design.
